Patrick Hanafin Website

Patrick Hanafin is Professor of Law and Assistant Dean of Research at Birkbeck Law School, University of London. Professor Hanafin has also held a visiting fellowship at Harvard Law School (1998-99), has been a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence (2002-2003) and has been Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria (2008). Professor Hanafin is a Board Member of the Irish Humanities and Social Sciences Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowships Committee. His research looks at the intersection between law and identity, in particular the manner in which particular narratives of identity are adopted and valorized in law by political and judicial elites. His books include: Conceiving Life: Reproductive Politics and the Law in Contemporary Italy (2007); Constituting Identity: Political Identity Formation and the Constitution in Post-Independence Ireland (2001) and Identity, Rights and Constitutional Transformation (With Melissa Williams) (1999).
