This lecture is introduced by Prof. Rosi Braidotti.
Professor Balibar is a recurring visitor at the Centre for the Humanities (Utrecht University). This public lecture was given as an addition to the master classes on “Civic Universality and the Anthropological Differences”. In cooperation with advanced students Balibar discussed a central philosophical issue concerning the relationship between “civic-bourgeois universalism”, principally asserting limitless access of every human being to the complete range of civil and political rights, and the new function of anthropological differences (sex-gender, age, health-normality, intellectuality, etc.). The complex paradox of the move from class to ethnic and gendered stratification was explored by comparing issues of special practical and theoretical importance.
